Canada opens doors wider to immigrants from Hong Kong

New immigration pathways open to Hong Kong residents

On November 12, 2020, the honorable immigration minister, Marco Mendicino announced new measures targeted towards the youth of Hong Kong to come study, work, and live in Canada. The new initiative allows Hong Kong residents in Canada or abroad who have completed post-secondary studies to apply for an open work permit, which may be valid for a period of 3 years. This will allow the youth of Hong Kong to gain valuable employment experience. Additionally, a new pathway for PR is being created in Canada for local Hong Kong residents in 2021. The criteria will include minimum language and education requirements and 1 year of work experience to become PR’s of Canada. The government is also processing study permit applications faster than usual. Recently there has been an increase in applications for study permits from Hong Kong. The Canadian government will continue to support this opportunity for students in Hong Kong. Once, their studies are completed they will have a clear pathway for PR in Canada. Our understanding of this message is aimed to give the youth of Hong Kong who aspires to study abroad new pathways to study in Canada.
